Overview

The Shed is a versatile outbuilding Set within a rural landscape, created for both work and leisure. Designed as a home office, entertainment space, guest retreat, storage space, and golf simulator. The building balances practical function with a refined architectural presence.

The Brief

The client required a flexible environment, with the ability to transition from a focused workspace to a relaxed entertainment space. Capable of housing vehicles, farm equipment, an office, a golf simulator, a shuffleboard and guest accommodation.

The building, designed to have a strong connection to the beauty of the surrounding area, with its pitched ceiling and expansive glazing. The electrical and lighting design needed to remain discreet, supporting the architecture, whilst avoiding visual clutter or glare. The clients, leaning toward modern aesthetics, desired a warm, inviting space.

Design Response - Lighting Design & Installation

Coastal developed a layered lighting approach that responds to the building’s varied uses.

Architectural track lighting and low-glare recessed fixtures, provide a clean visual. Carefully controlled beam angles provide task lighting for the office and simulator areas, minimising reflections across the large glazed surfaces.

Up-lights and a modern glass pendant emphasise the structure of the pitched ceilings without detracting from the view behind.

Warmer ambient lighting delivered via wall lights, mini downlights and LED strip,  highlighting interior features, introduces a softer atmosphere within the guest and lounge spaces. The building shifts naturally from daytime productivity to evening relaxation. Ensuring a calm, warm & welcoming atmosphere.

In addition to this, practical task lighting within the farm storage and workshop space, and landscape lighting to connect the shed to the main house.

Design Response - Architectural Electrical

Coastal provided the full electrical design and installation for the building, carefully integrating services to support both the practical workshop functions and the office and entertainment spaces.

Power distribution was designed to accommodate the office, guest areas, entertainment zones, and workshop, as well as dedicated electrical infrastructure for the golf simulator and audio-visual systems. Three-phase power was installed to support the workshop environment, including the vehicle hoist and equipment requiring higher electrical loads.

Throughout the project, careful attention was given to the placement of outlets, switches, and services to ensure they remained discreet within the architecture, preserving the clean aesthetic of the space while delivering practical functionality.

The result is a robust electrical system that quietly supports the building’s many uses without detracting from the overall design.

Outcome

The result is a highly adaptable space where lighting, architecture, and technology operate quietly in the background. Oozing with warmth at night and highly practical when needed. The Shed now functions as both a productive workspace and a welcoming rural retreat.
